DTEM Runs from Hard Drive but not Memory Stick

by cwb3106 » April 17th, 2012, 11:32 pm

I want to use DTEM from a memory stick on my work computer and from the local hard drive on my home computer. I installed DTEM on my home computer and it works fine. I used the "Install to a memory stick" option to put a copy on a flash drive. DTEM will not run from there. I get the following error in Windows 7 64 bit:
Description:
Stopped working

I also tried DTEM on a Windows XP computer with similar results. That is, works fine from the hard drive, crashes from a flash drive.

Hello,

I have fixed the issue with installing on to a flash-drive.
Please download the current version again and install it over your current installation.
http://www.animal-software.com/binaries/dolphin-text-editor-menu-installer.exe
Then choose the "Install to a memory stick..." again.

Thanks for the bug report!

Thanks for fixing this so quickly. I did encounter a different problem which I was able to work around. I installed the program on my home computer and used the "Install to a memory stick" option to update the flash drive I use at work. When I double clicked on the executable at work, I got the following error: "...DolphinTextEditorMenu.exe is not a valid Win32 application". I guessed that the problem might be related to my home computer running Vista 64-bit and my work computer running XP 32-bit. I started over and installed the program first to the hard drive on the XP machine, then used the "Install to a memory stick" option, then uninstalled the program from the hard drive. DTEM now runs correctly from the flash drive. I'm guessing that the issue is 32 vs 64 bit O/S rather than the differences between Vista and XP.

Ideally, the memory stick version should run correctly on both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. One approach I've seen is to install both versions of the executable, e.g., DTEM32.exe and DTEM64.exe plus a small startup program (or BAT file) that tests the O/S and starts the correct executable.

If you can't create a version that is portable across all operating systems, you should include a warning that the memory stick version is only usable on the same O/S as the creating computer.

Yes. I hadn't considered that problem.

I will have a think about what the best solution will be.
